What should we do with the entertainment and police video tapes rented by a deceased young man? Should we destroy them or return them to their owners?
It is impermissible to return films containing abominable content to their owners, as they contribute to corrupting people. However, it is not permissible to destroy the tapes entirely. Rather, the abominable content within them should be destroyed, and the tapes should be returned empty or with permissible content. If one chooses to return them to their owners, this constitutes a sin. If they are destroyed entirely, then compensation is due for the value of the tapes, empty of the forbidden content. The one who breaks musical instruments is not liable, because it is an act of changing a reprehensible evil, but the one who destroys them entirely is liable.
