What is the reality of the infallibility of prophets in general, and of Muhammad (peace be upon him) in particular? Do prophets commit sins, and what is the interpretation of Allah's saying, "That Allah may forgive you your sin of the past and what will follow"?

Scholars have agreed upon the infallibility of the prophets in conveying the message and in matters of major sins. Many of them, however, permitted the occurrence of minor sins from them. As for the verse of Al-Fath (The Victory), it has been said that it refers to the sins of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, before his prophethood, and what might occur in the future. The mistakes of the prophets are forgiven and submerged in their good deeds. We must strive to encourage the repentance of the disobedient, enjoin what is right, and forbid what is wrong.
