The answer

Bay' al-'Araya is the selling of fresh dates on palm trees for dry dates, or grapes for raisins. This is an exception to the prohibition of bay' al-muzabanah. It was named 'araya because it was stripped ('uriyat) of the prohibition, and its sale was permitted by estimating its worth in dates, while leaving the palm tree intact. A condition for this sale is that it must not exceed five awsuq, and it has other conditions that are agreed upon and some that are disputed among scholars.
