What is the ruling on the guest and the host when a thief falls from a roof while attempting to escape and be apprehended?

If the thief jumps and throws himself down to escape, then the one who chased him is not liable for his blood money, because he is the one who directly caused his own destruction. This is the view held by Imam Al-Shafi'i and transmitted by Al-Mawardi. The pursuit is a cause, and the act of throwing oneself down is a direct action. When both combine, the ruling of the cause is superseded by the direct action, just as he was not forced to throw himself down; rather, he himself hastened its destruction.
