How can an oath sworn on the Qur'an be annulled?

If a Muslim swears an oath by the Qur'an or by one of the names of Allah Almighty, and then wishes to retract his oath, he must offer expiation (kaffarah yamin). This expiation consists of feeding ten poor persons, clothing them, or emancipating a believing slave. If he cannot find any of these, then he must fast for three days. This is based on the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Indeed, by Allah—if Allah wills—I do not swear an oath and then see something else as better than it, except that I expiate for my oath and do that which is better," or "I do that which is better and expiate for my oath." And based on his (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: "Whoever swears an oath and then sees something else as better than it, let him expiate for his oath and do it." In another narration: "Let him expiate his oath and do that which is better."
