What is the ruling on an engaged woman speaking with her fiancé via the internet, given that the engagement has been announced and the engagement gift has been received?

The engagement is merely a proposal of marriage, and the fiancée remains a stranger to her suitor until the lawful marriage contract is concluded. It is not permissible for the suitor to be alone with his fiancée or to touch her. Nor is it permissible for them to have conversations that exceed the bounds of propriety, especially online, due to the forbidden acts that may result. It is advisable for the engaged couple not to speak to each other unless one of her mahrams is present. The statement that marriage during the time of the Prophet, peace be upon him, was without a contract is false, as the contract is a fundamental pillar, and the governmental document is merely a form of documentation for it.
