What is the ruling on selling or buying cats, and does the prohibition on the price of a feline (ath-thaman as-sinawr) apply only to wild cats or also to domestic ones?

The sale of cats is a matter of scholarly disagreement. The majority of scholars permit their sale, while others deem it forbidden.

For those who believe in the permissibility of selling them, or who follow the opinion of those who say so, there is no harm in it. However, it is more prudent to abstain from it to avoid disagreement and out of caution, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Leave that which makes you doubt for that which does not make you doubt."

It is not permissible to condemn someone who inclines towards the opinion of permissibility, for there is no condemnation in matters of disagreement.

Purchasing cats is not permissible according to those who forbid their sale, as it would constitute a void transaction. If the prohibition of their sale is established, then their sale is void. Ibn Hazm is of the view that the sale of cats is not lawful, and they must be given to whoever is in need of them to avert harm.
