What are the three signs of prophethood, with their explanation?
It is not possible to limit the signs of the prophethood of the Prophet, peace be upon him, to only three. A sign is an indication of his truthfulness and prophethood, encompassing miracles, portents, pre-birth prophecies, events at his birth, during his childhood, and before his mission. Al-Nawawi mentioned that his miracles exceed 1,200, and Ibn Hajar stated that they reached 1,000, and some say 3,000. Examples include the monk 'Isa's informing 'Abd al-Muttalib of the Prophet's prophethood on the night of his birth at Mar al-Dhahran, the splitting of his chest in his childhood, and the blessings that befell the home of Halima al-Sa'diya.
