What is Islam's stance on responding to beating and violence, and is it permissible to return a blow with its like, or to not defend oneself, along with mentioning the evidence?
You have done well by advising the wicked and reminding them of Allah. If they assault you, you are permitted to repel them through what is known as "repelling an aggressor," while adhering to the following guidelines:
1. Repel with the least harmful means, then the next least harmful. Do not strike forcefully if it is possible to repel with less force.
2. Avoid striking the face, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If one of you strikes his brother, let him avoid the face."
If you are in a country that governs by Sharia, you may sue the one who struck you for retribution in kind. The correct view is that retribution (qisas) is legislated for striking.
It is important for the aggressor to know that your forgiveness was out of ability, not out of weakness, especially if he is among the foolish. Forgiveness is desirable, but it should not become a reason for them to be emboldened against you.
