Is it permissible to undertake paid student research?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Performing the required research is an academic duty of the student. If some teachers or others undertake this on behalf of the student, whether for a fee or without, it is a forbidden act, because it involves deception, lying, and falsification, and it is cooperation in sin. Allah Almighty says: (And do not cooperate in sin and aggression) Al-Ma'idah/2. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: (Whoever deceives us is not of us) Narrated by Muslim (101). Therefore, it is not permissible for the student to delegate someone to do the research for him, nor is it permissible for anyone to do it on his behalf, nor to accept payment for it.
