What is the interpretation of the Almighty's saying: "That they may eat of its fruit, and their hands made it not. Will they not then give thanks?"

Sa'di's Tafsir states that Allah placed trees, date palms, and grapevines on Earth for people to eat of their fruit, as nourishment and as a delicacy. This fruit was not made by their hands, but rather it is the creation of Allah Almighty, and it does not require cooking. The verse then concludes by urging gratitude. The lam in Allah's saying: {لِيَأْكُلُوا} (so that they may eat) is for causation, meaning that Allah did this so that His servants might eat of its fruit and thank Allah. There is a difference of opinion regarding His saying: {وَمَا عَمِلَتْهُ أَيْدِيهِمْ} (and what their hands have not made) as to whether "ma" is a negative particle or a relative pronoun. If it is negative, then the meaning is that Allah bestowed this upon His servants not through their effort and striving, which is why it is followed by His saying: {أَفَلَا يَشْكُرُونَ} (Will they not then be grateful?). If it is a relative pronoun, then the meaning is: so that they may eat of its fruit and of what their hands have made from these fruits, such as juice, and their planting and tending of those trees.
