The story is authentic and well-known. Major scholars such as Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim, al-Alusi, and al-Shinqiti have mentioned it, using it as a proof. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar authenticated its chain of narration in "Al-Isabah," and no scholar has deemed it weak.
