What is the ruling on crossword puzzles and playing them?

Crossword puzzles are, in principle, a permissible mental game that relies on broad knowledge and culture. However, it is observed that most of them contain trivial or deviant words, or do not provide the participant with much benefit, and may divert them from seeking beneficial knowledge. They can also lead to an addiction that causes one to neglect duties. Therefore, many of them fall under the category of disliked pastimes if they do not contain anything forbidden and do not lead to abandoning duties or addiction. Otherwise, the ruling of prohibition is more appropriate. Those Muslims who prepare them should infuse them with what is beneficial.
