The question

What is the ruling on God's wrath befalling a son because he was not blessed with a mother who boasts of her honor and chastity? And what is the son's stance toward his mother – despite his certainty of her suspicious relationship – does she deserve affection, love, inquiry, and connection? And what is the son's stance toward his father for not informing him of this, even though he knows of the harm of his family's dispersion?

The answer

The mother alone bears the sin of her illicit relationship, and her children bear no burden if they advise her wisely. This action of the mother is not a sign of Allah's wrath upon her children, for each person is weighed by their deeds. This action does not negate the mother's right to dutifulness and maintaining ties of kinship. The son must advise her and warn her of the consequences of her action. If she persists, he should prevent her if he is able; otherwise, he should threaten her with informing the father. If she does not desist, he should inform some of her religious and wise relatives. If she still does not stop, he should inform the father of what is happening, even if it leads to her divorce.
