Are the tears that fall during prayer upon hearing the Qur’an from an imam with a beautiful voice due to awe of Allah, or are they a whim and love for beautiful voices? And is it a condition that the person experiencing them be of a high degree of faith and piety?

We hope your crying behind the imams is due to your being touched by the Quran, and this is not deniable. There is no harm in intending to go to the mosque because of the imam's good voice. It is not necessary for someone who cries out of fear of Allah to be strong in faith, for this can happen to any Muslim, and to many disobedient people when they remember their sins. We advise you to make sincere repentance and to refrain from committing minor sins, for persistence in them turns them into major sins, and they can be grave in the sight of Allah.
