The question

Is it a condition for a worshipper to hear himself recite Al-Fatiha in prayer that he raise his voice, even if that leads to disturbing other worshippers, or is it sufficient for him to recite in a normal voice even if he does not hear himself, especially when the Imam's voice is very loud?

The answer

The majority of scholars stipulate that for audible recitation (qira’ah jahriyyah), the reciter must hear himself. Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, however, holds that merely articulating the letters from their proper points of articulation is sufficient. The first opinion is more cautious. The condition of the reciter hearing himself is restricted to him having normal hearing and there being no impediment preventing him from hearing; otherwise, he must raise his voice to a level where he would hear himself were it not for the impediment. Al-Nawawi mentioned that the minimum for silent recitation (israr) is for the reciter to hear himself in all remembrances (adhkar) and supplications (du'a). If he does not have normal hearing, he should raise his voice to a level where he would hear himself if he did.
