What is the benefit of the ambiguous verses in the Holy Quran?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The wisdom behind the "mutashabih" (ambiguous verses) is one of trial, examination, and tribulation. Allah Almighty tests with both the "muhkam" (clear verses) and the "mutashabih." Allah Almighty says: "It is He who has sent down to you the Book; in it are verses [that are] muhkam - they are the mother of the Book - and others mutashabih. As for those in whose hearts is deviation, they will follow that of it which is mutashabih, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them]." The "mutashabihat" allow for an interpretation that aligns with the "muhkam." The Muslim's duty towards the "mutashabih" is to believe in it and refer it back to the "muhkam."
