What is the ruling on the continuity between two prayers when combining them, if the time interval between them is considered long?

In the case of Jam‘ al-Taqdim (combining prayers by performing the second prayer at the time of the first), muwalat (consecutiveness) between the two prayers is obligatory, though a slight separation that is customarily overlooked is forgiven. The correct view is that the intention is not a condition. As for Jam‘ al-Ta’khir (combining prayers by performing the first prayer at the time of the second), there is more leeway in the matter. However, it is preferable to maintain muwalat, following the example of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
