Is it permissible to give charity from money whose source is suspected to be unlawful, and is the recipient sinful for taking it?

The doubtful matter is that concerning which scholars have differed regarding its permissibility or prohibition, whether it be objects or earnings, or it is that in which the lawful is mixed with the unlawful. As for the Muslim's stance towards it, if its permissibility or prohibition becomes clear to him, he acts upon what has become clear. If the doubt persists, he should not venture into it, for fear of falling into what is clearly forbidden or coinciding with it. The practice of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the righteous after him, has been to guard against doubtful matters. So, whoever acquires wealth that is doubtful, he may give it in charity. However, whoever acquires wealth from unlawful means, he is obligated to dispose of it, and that is not charity, for charity can only be from what is lawful. There is no harm in the needy person accepting charity.
