Is deporting a maid—whether with or without cause—considered cutting off her livelihood?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Provisions are decreed and predetermined, and no one can cut off another's provision except by what Allah has ordained. Regarding the deportation of a male or female domestic worker: if the contract is for a fixed term, it is obligatory to fulfill it, and it is not permissible to terminate it unless one of the parties breaches the conditions. If no specific term is stipulated but a monthly wage is agreed upon, the contract becomes binding upon the start of the month, and it is not permissible to terminate it during that month. It can be terminated before the beginning of the following month. A lease contract is binding, and it is not permissible to terminate it before its term expires, unless the lessee waives their right to the benefits and pays the full rent. One must beware of oppressing the hired worker and depriving them of their wage.
