How do the people of the Great Sahara fast when Ramadan falls in summer, making fasting difficult or impossible for several years?

Fasting the month of Ramadan (definition) is obligatory for every accountable, resident, healthy Muslim, based on the Almighty’s saying: (So whoever among you witnesses the month, let him fast it). Fasting remains obligatory even if the weather is hot, because it is one of the pillars of Islam. If a fasting person experiences severe thirst that threatens his life, it is permissible for him to break his fast with what preserves his life, then he should abstain [from further eating/drinking] and make up for that day later.
