Is obesity forbidden or reprehensible, and how can one lose weight in the Prophetic way?
The blameworthy obesity is that which results from excessive indulgence in worldly pleasures and desires, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "And obesity will appear among them." This type of obesity indicates excessive luxury and is not among the praiseworthy matters. As for natural, inherent obesity, it is not blameworthy. To lose weight, moderation in eating and drinking is recommended, limiting oneself to what sustains the body, with a third for food, a third for drink, and a third for breath, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "No human ever filled a vessel worse than his stomach. A few morsels are sufficient for the son of Adam to sustain his backbone; but if it is unavoidable, then a third for his food, a third for his drink, and a third for his breath." Excessive satiety harms the body and the heart, and causes laziness in performing acts of worship.
