Naming a person "Abd al-Rasool" (servant of the Messenger) or "Abd so-and-so" (servant of so-and-so) is not permissible. This does not contradict the verse, "And marry the unmarried among you and the righteous among your male servants and female servants" (An-Nur: 32), because the addition of "servants" to their masters in the verse refers to ownership (milk ). There is a clear difference between a person being a servant or a freed slave to another, and being named and called "Abd so-and-so."
