Is abortion permissible in the first month of pregnancy due to the husband's refusal and medical concerns that the child will be weaned after birth given the mother's severe rheumatoid arthritis?
Abortion is not permissible in the first month or at any other stage, unless the mother's life is exposed to a grave, certain danger, or a highly probable danger, due to the pregnancy. In such a case, abortion is permissible to preserve her life. However, the husband's unwillingness to have a child or the mother's inability to breastfeed does not justify abortion. If the pregnancy is in its first stage (the first forty days) and there is a legitimate religious benefit or a دفع ضرر متوقع (warding off an anticipated harm) in aborting it, then it is permissible to abort it. But aborting it out of fear of the hardship of raising children or being content with the current number of children is not permissible.
