Was Ma'iz ibn Malik married or single, and if he was single, why was he stoned? And is the man from "Banu Aslam," about whose problem similar hadiths have been narrated, the same person as Ma'iz?

The hadiths that mention the story of Ma'iz in the Sahihayn appeared in various forms. Some mention his name (Ma'iz) without describing him as muhsan (having been in a valid marriage), while others mention him attributed to his tribe (a man from Aslam) and describe him as muhsan. The similarity in the context of these hadiths confirms that they speak of one single story, which is the story of Ma'iz (may Allah be pleased with him), and that he was muhsan when he was stoned, as stated in the narrations of Bukhari, Muslim, and the Sunan collections. Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar affirmed in Fath al-Bari that all these hadiths deal with the story of Ma'iz ibn Malik. Stoning is deserved by the muhsan fornicator, whether he committed fornication once or repeatedly. As for the non-muhsan, his prescribed punishment is one hundred lashes and exile for one year.
