Is it permissible for a man to take an oath of "Ila'" more than once a year (for example, three times), knowing that he is married to another woman and does not need to cohabit with her? And is he obligated to compensate his wife after the period ends for the days he cohabited with his second wife? And if the four-month period is too long for the wife, is it permissible for her to seek a divorce to prevent the temptation of fornication or masturbation?

Ila' is an oath to abstain from sexual intercourse with one's wife for four months or more. This is forbidden because it harms the wife, even if the husband does it only once.

The husband is obligated to have sexual intercourse with his wife in a reasonable manner, as this is one of her most emphasized rights upon him. Its frequency is determined by her needs and his capacity.

If a man has two wives, he must be just between them in terms of night lodging. If he deprives one of them of her share, he must make it up to her. However, justice is not required between them in terms of sexual intercourse, but this should not reach the point of harming the wife, and he is not permitted to abstain from one of them to save his strength for the other.

If the husband persists in abstaining from sexual intercourse with his wife, and the wife fears harm, she should refer her case to the competent authorities. The wife should also strive for chastity, such as by fasting and avoiding arousal-inducing stimuli.
