How do we reconcile the Prophet's—may Allah bless him and grant him peace—prohibition of the mizmar, considering it a "cursed sound," with his listening to the daff, even though both are musical instruments and pleasing to the listener?

Musical instruments are forbidden, with the tambourine (daf) being an exception in specific contexts to express joy. They are not equal in ruling, for the Islamic law possesses wisdom in differentiating between them. Musical instruments have a profound effect on souls; they lead one away from moderation, strip the listener of his dignity and integrity, and cause addiction to them. Therefore, they are considered from the "sound of Satan." As for the tambourine, it is simple and cannot be compared to wind instruments and other musical instruments in its effect, nor does it cause addiction. A Muslim must submit to the commands and prohibitions of Islamic law, even if he does not grasp the wisdom behind them.
