The daff (tambourine) is among the prohibited musical instruments, except for what has been exempted in weddings. Its prohibition is not limited to cases where it distracts from the remembrance of Allah or leads to indecency. The hadith in Bukhari that prohibits musical instruments is authentic, and we have clarified the soundness of its chain of narration and refuted those who claimed its weakness. As for what was mentioned about Abdullah ibn Ja'far and others, it does not contradict the prohibition of musical instruments. Indeed, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah transmitted that the narration of musical instruments from Ibn Umar is false, and what is authentically reported from him is his condemnation of singing, as well as from other leading Companions such as Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Abbas, and Jabir. Abdullah ibn Ja'far is not among those whose words or actions can contradict the words of Ibn Mas'ud, Ibn Umar, and their likes. What he did was in his own home and was not considered a religion or an act of obedience. It is not permissible to compare this issue with other matters, as there is nothing reported from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, that contradicts the prohibition of musical instruments. The actions of the Companions, the Tabi'in, or the jurists are not legal proofs that can specify a hadith or a verse.
