What is the meaning of the word "Ayat" and does it have another meaning besides "sign" or "miracle"?

Linguistically, an ayah (verse) means a sign, a lesson, an indication, or a group. A verse from the Qur’an is called an ayah because it is a sign marking the end of one passage and the beginning of another, or because it is a collection of Qur’anic letters. The ayats of Allah are His wonders. Its plural forms are: ay, ayay, or aya’, and ayat.
