If a person repents of a sin, will he be punished for it in this world despite the hadith: "The one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin," and what is the benefit of repentance if punishment befalls the repentant in this world?

Whoever repents sincerely and نصوحًا (with pure repentance), the consequence of that sin is lifted from him, and he becomes as if he had not sinned, according to the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "The one who repents from sin is like one who has no sin." However, what is important is to complete the repentance in its correct manner. The Salaf (early Muslims) were certain that one who repents with sincere repentance will not be punished. Their fear was concerning their failure to perform repentance correctly, not that they saw punishment as inevitable even with repentance. Sheikh al-Islam said: "As for the imams of the Salaf: they did not definitively assert Paradise because they were not certain that one had performed what was commanded and avoided what was forbidden, or that one had performed sincere repentance (توبة نصوح). Otherwise, they were certain that whoever repents with sincere repentance, Allah accepts his repentance."
