Is it permissible to seek divorce from a husband who has changed for the better after previous abuses (beating, humiliation, a previous divorce), if the wife still remembers the abuses and feels hatred towards him, and he does not agree to the divorce?
Divorce is detestable to Allah, and it is impermissible for a woman to request it from her husband without a valid reason. If there is a legitimate excuse, such as abuse or humiliation, then she is permitted to seek divorce. However, if the excuse ceases to exist, then it is not permissible for her to do so. If she dislikes her husband and fears that she will not be able to uphold the limits set by Allah, then khul' (divorce at the wife's instance, usually with compensation to the husband) is legislated for her in exchange for money. Nevertheless, it is advised not to rush in seeking khul', for hearts may change, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Love your beloved moderately, for he may be your enemy one day; and hate your hated one moderately, for he may be your beloved one day."
