What is the interpretation of the Hadith "I am as My servant expects Me to be" in the context of the story of the man who thought Allah would punish him, so He forgave him, and the saying of Umar ibn al-Khattab, "If a caller from the heavens were to announce: 'O people, all of you will enter Paradise except for one man,' I would fear that I am that one"? And is this considered a negative expectation on his part, even though he is among those given glad tidings of Paradise?

Intense fear of Allah and expecting His punishment, coupled with hope for His mercy, is not a bad assumption; rather, it is a perfection of faith. The forbidden bad assumption is complete despair of Allah's mercy and cutting off hope in it, which is one of the major sins. The difference between the two is that the first allows for mercy, while the second severs it. It is recommended for the sick person to prioritize hope, and for the healthy person to prioritize fear, though they may be equal. The hadith about the man who ordered himself to be burned and scattered is not despair; rather, it is an excessive, overwhelming fear of Allah.
