Is prayer in the dark desirable or reprehensible?
Prayer in a dark place is originally permissible, neither disliked nor recommended. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, prayed in a dark place, as narrated in the hadith of Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her. Ibn Uthaymeen mentioned that praying in darkness was the norm during the time of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, due to the absence of lamps. Prayer in darkness may become disliked if the worshipper fears it and his mind becomes distracted. It may become recommended if it is more conducive to humility and distancing oneself from distractions. Darkness in prayer is only disliked if it is a source of fear that diminishes humility.
