Why is there no hadith that prohibits taking from the beard or specifies its length and width? And does defining it by not touching it constitute an addition to the religion? And is imitating disbelievers related to not growing beards, even though the religious among them do grow them? And what is the interpretation of ‘Umar ibn al-Khattab taking from his beard as narrated in Sahih al-Bukhari? And does leaving the beard untrimmed conform with the Prophet’s urging of neatness and his use of the comb?

Shaving the beard is unlawful due to the saying of the Prophet, peace be upon him: "Trim the moustaches and let the beards grow; do not resemble the polytheists," a narration agreed upon [by Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. Also, due to the prohibition of resembling the disbelievers and the consensus of the majority of scholars on this matter. The Prophet, peace be upon him, used to let his beard grow, and we do not know of any hadith that specifies its length or width. Some scholars permitted taking what exceeds a fistful of the beard if it is excessively long or excessively wide, which is what Ibn 'Umar and Abu Hurayrah did, but it is better to leave it as it is.

Care must be taken to clean and comb the hair of the head and beard, as the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Whoever has hair, let him honor it." As for the narration that the Prophet, peace be upon him, took from the width and length of his beard, it is weak according to scholars and cannot be used as a proof.
