The question

Is it permissible to use the remaining bonus miles from Al Rajhi Bank's Tasawwaq and Fursan prepaid Visa cards, knowing that benefiting from them might be Haram? If not permissible, is it allowed to gift them or transfer them to another person? And is it permissible to benefit from Bank AlJazira's Wow program?

The answer

There is no objection to using a prepaid Visa card, but it is not permissible for the bank to give gifts for this card, nor is it permissible to accept them. This is because depositing funds into the card's balance is considered a loan from the customer to the bank, and a gift on a loan is prohibited before repayment. This is based on the resolution of the International Islamic Fiqh Academy No. 86 (3/9), which states that demand deposits are loans from a jurisprudential perspective. It has been reported from the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the noble Companions that accepting a gift on a loan is forbidden, unless it was customary before the loan, or if the lender accounted it as part of the debt. Therefore, dispose of any remaining miles you have by giving them to someone in need. As for the "WOW" program, which allows the customer to earn points for banking transactions and card usage, if the account is a current account or a deposit in a prepaid Visa card, it is not permissible to take gifts for it, because it is a loan. However, for investment or savings accounts, there is no harm in taking gifts for them, provided that the account is not interest-bearing.
