What is the ruling on placing images of animate beings on Facebook covers, or parts of them such as the face, or an incomplete body, or a butterfly, or black images whose features are not entirely visible?

Images of living beings on Facebook covers are of two types:

a- Images captured by cameras: The basic ruling for these is permissibility, whether they are full, cut, or have effaced features, unless they are forbidden for another reason. This is the predominant type on Facebook.

b- Images drawn by hand or computer: The basic ruling for these is prohibition, unless they are cut or have their features effaced. In such cases, there is a detailed explanation mentioned in Fatwa no. 103003.
