What is the ruling on staying with young people who do not pray and who do things that displease Allah? Is it obligatory to leave their company? And what is the religious ruling on my remaining among them? And what should I do if the same problem exists in the family home, knowing that I have cut ties with my brother due to his extreme corruption and atheism, and I found that cutting ties with him was better for me?
A person is influenced by those they live with. Therefore, it is recommended to associate with and mix with righteous people, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "A man is upon the religion of his intimate friend, so let one of you look at whom he befriends," and "Do not associate except with a believer." One should seek housing with people who help in obedience and prayer. One should strive to guide friends and relatives through sincere advice, good admonition, gifting beneficial materials, and connecting them with righteous people. It is not permissible to live with unrighteous people unless there is a necessity or if one is safe from being influenced by them and can influence them. Abandoning a brother is not prescribed unless advice and discussion have been given and proven ineffective, and the abandonment will influence him to return to the truth. However, if abandonment does not affect him, there is no benefit in it. The prophets did not abandon their peoples despite their insistence on polytheism, like the patience of Noah, peace be upon him. The Prophet's abandonment of some of his companions occurred after the establishment of the Islamic state and had an effect on them. Therefore, one should not abandon someone who is not affected by abandonment; rather, one should continue inviting and advising them.
