Is it permissible for a pregnant woman residing in France, whom her doctor advised not to fast in Ramadan to avoid repeated miscarriages, to pay the fidya in cash and send it to the people of Gaza after the month ends, due to the absence of poor or needy people to whom the fidya can be paid in her place of residence?
A pregnant woman may break her fast if she fears for herself, or her child, or both. She must make up the missed days (qada') and feed the poor (fidya) if she broke her fast solely out of fear for her child. It is permissible to give the fidya before, during, or after making up the missed fasts, but it is preferable to do so promptly. According to the majority of scholars, giving the monetary value of the food is not sufficient. However, the more sound opinion () permits this out of necessity or benefit, such as the absence of a poor person or the difficulty of transporting food. It is better to appoint someone to distribute the food where the poor are found. There is no harm in transferring and spending the expiation outside of your country.
