How can we identify a hypocrite, and what is the Islamic ruling concerning them?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Hypocrisy is of two types: conceptual hypocrisy, which expels its perpetrator from the fold of Islam, and practical hypocrisy, which is a sin. This occurs by exhibiting some of the characteristics of hypocrites mentioned in the Hadith: "Four qualities, whoever has them all, is a pure hypocrite; and whoever has one of them, has a characteristic of hypocrisy until he abandons it: when entrusted, he betrays; when he speaks, he lies; when he makes a covenant, he acts treacherously; and when he disputes, he behaves impiously." For practical hypocrisy, sincere repentance is sufficient.
