What are the Sharia-compliant guidelines for the names and attributes of Allah?

The approach of the righteous predecessors (Salaf Saliheen) and the People of the Sunnah and the Community (Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah) regarding the names and attributes of Allah is as follows: They believe that Allah has beautiful names and lofty attributes that possess true meanings, and that their modality (kayfiyyah) is unknown. They affirm whatever Allah has affirmed for Himself or whatever His Messenger has affirmed for Him, without distortion (tahrif), nullification (ta'teel), asking "how" (takyeef), or likening (tamtheel). They base this on His, the Almighty's, saying: "There is nothing like Him, and He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing," and His saying: "and they do not encompass Him in knowledge."
