Is it permissible to eat the fruits of trees planted next to septic tanks?
Scholars have differed concerning the ruling on eating the fruits of trees that are irrigated with impure water or fertilized with impure substances. Most of them are of the opinion that it is permissible to eat them and that they are pure, due to the transformation (istinabah) of the impurity within them. This is the of Abu Hanifa, Malik, and Al-Shafi'i. Whereas the Hanbalis went to the extreme of considering them impure and prohibited to eat, unless they are irrigated with pure water that removes the substance of the impurity. The more apparent opinion is the first one, which permits it, and therefore, there is no harm in eating from trees planted next to septic tanks (which absorb impure wastewater).
