Why did God not grant victory to the people of Syria?

A servant must accuse himself and exonerate his Lord. Whatever evil befalls him is from himself, and whatever good befalls him is from Allah. Indeed, Allah does not change what is with a people until they change what is within themselves, and Allah's blessings are only removed due to disobedience. Furthermore, a servant cannot encompass Allah's wisdom in His decree and destiny with his knowledge, nor can he comprehend its secrets, for what he perceives as evil may, in fact, be good. One must observe Allah's cosmic laws, which show no favoritism and do not change, and that everything has an appointed term.
