The question

Is what Al-Albani said—that masturbation does not invalidate the fast—an analogical deduction (qiyas) based on the sayings of Aisha and Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with them), or does it contradict his statement that unlawful desires invalidate the fast?

The answer

A commentary by Al-Albani on the hadith: "He gives up his food, drink, and desires for My sake," has not been found. Al-Albani was of the view that masturbation with ejaculation does not break the fast, nor is it equated with intercourse, citing narrations from the Salaf, such as the hadith of Aisha: "Everything except intercourse." He believed that the default is non-nullification of the fast, and that intercourse is more severe than masturbation, thus it should not be analogized to it. He rejected equating masturbation with intercourse and highlighted the inconsistency of those who held this view, as well as their deviation from the narrations of the Salaf. As for the fatwa we adopt, it is that the emission of semen through masturbation or direct contact (mubasharah) invalidates the fast, and this is the opinion of the general body of scholars.
