People regarding the issue of adherence to a madhhab (school of thought) and taqlid (following a qualified scholar) are of three types: one blameworthy extreme that condemns adherence to a madhhab and taqlid absolutely, and another blameworthy extreme that calls for absolute taqlid, even if it contradicts evidence. As for the moderate and praiseworthy type, it is that which is enlightened by the sayings of the imams, studies their fiqh, follows the evidence while seeking an excuse for the common person who engages in taqlid, and advises against argumentation and disputation in these matters.
