What is the wisdom behind fasting the blessed month of Ramadan, in addition to it being a divine command?
Allah Almighty ordained fasting the month of Ramadan to achieve taqwa (piety), which is to create a shield between the servant and Allah’s punishment. Taqwa is defined as obeying Allah without disobedience, remembering Him without forgetfulness, and being grateful to Him without ingratitude. To achieve this goal, the fasting person must adhere to the manners of fasting and avoid anything that blemishes it, for fasting is a "shield" (junnah), meaning protection from sins in this world and from Hellfire in the hereafter. Therefore, the fasting person must not utter obscenities or commit فسوق (transgression), and must guard their hearing, sight, and tongue from lies and unlawful acts.
