Zakat on gold becomes obligatory when it reaches the nisab and a full year (hawl) has passed on it. It is not permissible to delay its payment. If the muzakki (the one paying zakat) does not find money to pay the zakat, he must sell a portion of the gold on which zakat is due to settle the zakat obligation, or borrow money if he expects to be able to repay it.
