What is the ruling on smelling blessings (food and drinks)?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Sharia prohibits breathing into a vessel and blowing into drink, due to the possibility of altering the drink, contaminating it with diseases, or imparting unpleasant odors from the mouth or stomach. Some scholars have extended this to include burping into the vessel. As for smelling food or drink, it is prohibited if it leads to the food being affected by one's breath. However, if it is merely to distinguish the scent without the breath reaching the food, there is no harm in it. It is disliked to smell hot food or its rising steam if one does not take care to smell it from a distance or ensure that no part of their breath affects it.
