Is it obligatory to give Zakat al-Fitr to relatives who have wronged us, and does this fall under the saying of the Almighty: "And let not those among you who are blessed with graces and abundance swear not to give (any longer) to their kinsfolk, and the poor, and those who left their homes for Allah’s Cause. Let them pardon and forgive. Do you not love that Allah should forgive you? And Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful"?

Verse 22 of Surat An-Nur calls for forgiveness and overlooking the faults of those who do wrong, especially among relatives and the needy. This verse was revealed concerning Abu Bakr As-Siddiq, may Allah be pleased with him, when he swore he would no longer spend on Mistah ibn Uthathah after the incident of the slander (Al-Ifk). The lesson, however, is in the generality of the wording, not the specificity of the reason for its revelation. Thus, the verse addresses everyone who has been wronged by a relative, enjoining them to respond to the wrongdoing with forgiveness, kindness, and by not severing ties of kinship. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, also advised patience in the face of harm from relatives and to reciprocate with kindness, for the one who maintains ties is not the one who merely reciprocates, but rather the true maintainer of ties is he who reconnects his kinship when it has been severed.
