What is the ruling on a person blowing himself up to kill a group of infidel enemies, in what are called martyrdom operations?

Detonating oneself is forbidden suicide, based on the Almighty's saying: (And do not kill yourselves), and the Prophet's ﷺ saying: (Whoever kills himself with a piece of iron, that iron will be in his hand, and he will stab his belly with it in the Fire of Hell, abiding therein eternally, forever).

This cannot be likened to the boy of the Ditch [Aṣḥāb al-Ukhdūd] because he did not kill himself with his own hand. Nor can it be likened to the story of al-Barā’s charge, due to the absence of certain death. Nor to the hadith about charging bareheaded into the enemy, as there is a possibility of survival. In addition to this, such detonation sometimes leads to the loss of life without benefit, or the loss of innocent lives, or causing amplified retaliation from the enemy.

A number of prominent contemporary scholars have issued fatwas regarding this prohibition, including: - Sheikh Abdul Aziz Ibn Baz: "It is not permissible because it is self-killing." - Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymeen: "We believe that suicidal operations in which a person is certain to die are forbidden, rather they are among the gravest sins, because the Prophet ﷺ informed that (Whoever kills himself with something in this world will be tormented with it on the Day of Resurrection). And because jihad in the way of Allah is intended to protect Islam and Muslims, and this suicide bomber destroys himself and loses a member of the Muslims by his suicide. Furthermore, it involves harm to others."
