What is the ruling on sitting in gatherings where Allah is not mentioned, and must they be boycotted?

A gathering where idle talk and useless speech occur, but do not reach the level of sin, should be avoided, and one should not participate in it. However, this avoidance is not obligatory unless it involves backbiting or forbidden speech. Allah has praised those who turn away from idle talk, saying: ﴿Certainly, have succeeded the believers Those who are in their prayers humbly submissive And those who turn away from ill speech.﴾ [Al-Mu'minun: 1-3]. Ibn Kathir interpreted "ill speech" (al-laghw) as falsehood, which includes polytheism, sins, and any words or actions that are useless. Among the qualities of the servants of the Most Merciful is: ﴿And when they pass by ill speech, they pass by with dignity.﴾ [Al-Furqan: 72].

A gathering in which Allah is not mentioned will be a source of regret for its participants on the Day of Resurrection, and it will be a cause of loss and regret for them. The remembrance of Allah in gatherings can take many forms, including reciting the verses of Allah, discussing the Prophet's (peace be upon him) life and sending blessings upon him, and concluding the gathering with the supplication for atonement of the gathering: "Exalted are You, O Allah, and praised be You. I bear witness that there is no deity except You. I seek Your forgiveness and repent to You."
